Teori alienasi Karl Marx mendeskripsikan (Jerman: Entfremdung ) orang-orang dari aspek-aspek ("esensi spesies") mereka sebagai konsekuensi dari kehidupan di dalam masyarakat dengan golongan- golongan sosial yang terstratifikasi. Karl Marx mencetuskan teori Entfremdung mengenai alienasi diri dalam Manuskrip Ekonomi dan Filsafat 1844 (1927).
